Hitachi Receives FDA Clearance for Echelon Oval 1.5T Wide-Bore MRI

The two foci, “Image performance” and “Comfort performance” are brought together in a new shape of MRI – New from Hitachi of open MRI

In order to have the high level of the two foci, “image performance” and “comfort performance in the examination environment”, Hitachi of “open MRI” have finally reached a new level called “OVAL”.

Hitachi’s cutting-edge high-performance applications that bring about unprecedented high quality.

Design and Innovation – WIT – that bring about a dramatically comfortable and efficient examination environment .

Hitachi’s new MRI – ECHELON OVAL – will provide you with a completely new MRI operational performance.

OVAL Patient Bore

Hitachi has a long history of developing open MRI systems with “patient-friendly” as the basic concept. An OVAL Patient Bore is the result of succeeding this tradition and continuing to pursue “patient-friendly”. Because a patient lying on the table gives an oval shape, the bore is extended in an oval shape and provides those with wide shoulder length or those who are claustrophobic with a comfortable examination zone so that they can be in a relaxed mood.

OVAL Patient Bore

The examination space is expanded by approximately 40% compared with conventional models (when the spine coil is used, compared with our models). There is an enough space even for large-built patients so that they can be in a relaxed mood during examinations.

WIT:Workflow Integrated Technology will improve the examination environment with more practicality and usability.

WIT Mobile Table

The table can be attached to and detached from the gantry. By placing and switching patients who have difficulty in walking, on the table outside the examination room, the risk of the belongings of the helper being absorbed by the magnets can be reduced. The table can be connected to the gantry easily even in an oblique approach towards it.

The expanded tabletop to match the large diameter OVAL Patient Bore gives the examination zone a wide space which helps ease the stress felt by those patients who do not like a confined space. Furthermore, shoulders and knees which are in off-center regions can be imaged with the magnetic field at the center producing high-quality images.

WIT RF Coil System

ECHELON OVAL is mounted with the WIT RF coil system, which has realised both a high-sensitivity receiver coil and workflow. The Spine coil, which fits into the tabletop can be easily attached to and detached from the tabletop, is cable-less . The back side can be wrapped around using the Torso coil making abdominal imaging highly sensitive.

WIT Monitor

The front of the gantry is mounted with a monitor that can display various types of information on the patient including the pulse wave, ECG waves, and respiratory waves. In addition, information such as the patient name, weight, setting of imaging posture and connected coils can be confirmed, which can also be edited on the spot.

Echelon Oval sets a new standard for premium wide bore 1.5T MRI with its patient shaped design, resulting in a 74 cm oval bore – the widest in the industry.

“With the evolving changes in health care delivery putting ever more emphasis on patient comfort and satisfaction, Echelon Oval re-shapes expectations for MR imaging,” said Sheldon Schaffer, Vice President and General Manager, MR and CT.

The latest innovation from Hitachi addresses the important aspects of patient accessibility, broad range of clinical capability and optimized workflow. All patients, particularly claustrophobic and anxious ones, will benefit from increased space and visibility. With a diverse suite of advanced imaging techniques including non-contrast MRA, isotropic image acquisition, robust fat suppression and much more, Echelon Oval delivers high diagnostic confidence. In addition, Hitachi’s Workflow Integrated Technology (WIT) suite of efficiency-focused and patient-friendly features, such as an integrated coil system and wide mobile table, optimize the entire imaging process.

“For over two decades Hitachi has lead the way in innovative, reliable MR products that have always put the comfort of the patient first,” Schaffer added. “Echelon Oval joins a storied progression of MR products that deliver state-of-the-art imaging capability, without sacrificing patient comfort.’”

About Hitachi, Ltd.

Hitachi, Ltd., (NYSE: HIT) (TOKYO: 6501), headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, is a leading global electronics company with approximately 362,000 employees worldwide on the consolidated basis. Fiscal 2010 (ended March 31, 2011) consolidated revenues totaled 9,316 billion yen ($110.9 billion). Hitachi will focus more than ever on the Social Innovation Business, which includes Information and Telecommunication Systems, Power Systems, Industrial, Transportation and Urban Development Systems, as well as the sophisticated Materials and Key Devices that support them.

Hitachi Medical Systems received FDA clearance for its Echelon Oval 1.5T Ultra-Wide MR system. The Echelon Oval has a bore that is, as the name implies, oval-shaped, very much unlike conventional MRI systems which have a round bore. The opening is 65cm high and 74cm wide, accommodating even the largest patients and reducing feelings of claustrophobia. When the spine coil is used, this results in approximately 40% more examination space compared to conventional MRI systems.

Looking further than just the shape and size of the bore, the Echelon Oval’s imaging capabilities include non-contrast MRA, isotropic image acquisition and robust fat suppression. It features Hitachi’s Workflow Integrated Technology (WIT) suite which includes an integrated coil system and a wide mobile table.
