Johnson & Johnson‘s Animas division received FDA clearance to introduce its OneTouch Vibe Plus insulin pump and continuous glucose monitoring system. The system uses Dexcom‘s G5 continuous stick-on glucometer which talks to the OneTouch Vibe Plus, as well as the Dexcom G5 App. Glucose readings can be checked anytime on the Vibe Plus as well as right within the app for discreet easy and frequent monitoring. The app can be used to easily share historical readings with one’s physician as well as family caretakers.

The system is indicated for patients as young as two years old. Since it wirelessly connects to a smartphone app, it makes it a lot easier to check on kids’ sugar levels without constantly bugging them about it.

Koogeek, a company that specializes in smart vital measurement devices, sent us their T1 ear and forehead “smart thermometer” to review.

First off, the T1 is extremely easy to use. There are two buttons: one to power on (hold for two seconds), and one to measure temperature. The power button also doubles as a toggle button between the function for ear and forehead measurements.

koogeek-2koogeek-3The device powered up quickly, needed no warm-up time, and outputted a measurement in about a second. Such a quick measurement would come handy in a feverish, fussy baby. The notification sound was a surprisingly-pleasing “bleep”, which indicated that the measurement was complete. The accompanying app connected easily with Bluetooth, looked great, and kept a record of previous temperatures. When I tried it on myself, it gave me an ear temp of 36.6ºC and forehead temp of 37.0ºC. No fever here! While it currently doesn’t have FDA clearance for the T1, Koogeek is working on getting the paperwork through the system.

Though usage of the T1 was quick and easy, the build quality is on the lower end and almost feels toy-ish. Also, the thermometer would have been better if it had come with a backlit screen for readings at night. You’ll have to shine a light on its LCD or start up the app, a minor inconvenience that might be intensified if you end up waking up your sick child with a bright light while reading their temperature. Lastly, people I tested the T1 with remarked at the lack of ear covers – you’ll have to clean the earpiece manually each time you use it.

Overall, the Koogeek is an easy-to-use and cheap ear and forehead thermometer. It’s got no fancy frills, but gets the basic job done. The app gives you a history of readings – really the main feature you’d want from a smart thermometer. It’s available at a low enough price that it has the potential to become popular with a lot of people around the world living on a tight budget.

A recent study in The Journal of General Physiology characterizes the movement of rhodopsin, a GPCR and member of a large family of transmembrane receptors responsible for many cellular responses and involved in many human diseases.

In living Xenopus rod photoreceptor cells, rhodopsin is found in stacks of disc membranes that are difficult to study due to their small size. Now, Peter Calvert (SUNY Upstate Medical University) and colleagues have developed an approach with two-photon microscopy that, for the first time, allows direct examination within the living cell of how the geometry of the micro-compartment will affect its signaling.

The team focused on the effect of micro-compartments formed by “incisures”, radial membrane boundaries that segment the discs into smaller regions. These micro-compartments, defined by the rim and incisures, have a surface area similar to that of a human or mouse rod photoreceptor disc, so that the total number of components in the GPCR signaling cascade are conserved, and the downstream effects of a captured photon of light are similar. Calvert and colleagues used a novel high-resolution approach to monitor fluorescently labeled rhodopsin as it diffused in the disc membrane. The team developed a model of molecular diffusion to interpret the results that explicitly took the measured micro-compartments into account, and found that the boundary geometry, not heterogeneity in diffusion or a “bound fraction,” was sufficient to explain differences in the extent of diffusion or rhodopsin in different regions of the disc.

AIUM grants ultrasound practice accreditation to Smith Institute for Urology

The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) recently granted ultrasound practice accreditation in urology to Smith Institute for Urology in New Hyde Park, New York. This is the first practice to receive accreditation in the practice of urology from the AIUM. Ultrasound practice accreditation is a voluntary peer review process that allows practices to demonstrate that they meet or exceed nationally recognized standards in the performance and interpretation of diagnostic ultrasound examinations. The accreditation process encourages providers of diagnostic ultrasound services to assess their strengths and weaknesses and initiate changes to improve their practices.

Practice director Bruce Gilbert, MD stated “As our practice grew, we greatly increased the number of physicians, sonographers, and locations at which ultrasound studies were being performed. This engendered the need for a uniform protocol for ultrasound studies to assure consistent quality. The AIUM Accreditation process helped organize our approach and markedly improve the quality of our process. ”

The AIUM and the American Urological Association (AUA) worked collaboratively to develop the Practice Guideline for the Performance of an Ultrasound Examination in the Practice of Urology. The guideline was developed to assist practitioners performing an ultrasound examination in the practice of urology and provides direction in the areas of kidney, bladder, prostate, scrotal and penile ultrasound. The guideline also addresses key issues relating to documentation, quality control and improvement, safety, infection control and patient education.

In addition, the two organizations developed Training Guidelines for urologists who perform ultrasound. Both documents were integral pieces to the development of urologic ultrasound practice accreditation.

Robotized TMS is a novel approach in the application for image guided transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).

SmartMove allows planning of a complete stimulation session ahead by defining stimulation sites based on anatomical MRI information and functional information like fMRI, PET or EEG/MEG. During the execution of the TMS stimulation sequence, the system places the coil at the predefined target positions and keeps the coil in place even if the head of the patient/subject moves.

The robotic system is able to define stimulation targets based on the individual anatomy of the brain. Based on the intended target, it calculates the optimal position of the TMS coil. Because of the optical position sensor the system is provided with, movements of the patient’s head are constantly monitored. When the patient’s head moves, the position and the orientation of the TMS coil are adjusted accordingly. SmartMove is able to perform a wide range of tasks, from the simple maintenance of the TMS coil at the intended target to the definition and performance of complex stimulation protocols.
